Mobilicity Gets Axed

Mobilicity

Rogers just announced that its recent acquisition of Mobilicity, the carrier that once hoped to popularize unlimited phone plans in Canada, will be getting axed by the end of this year.

Existing Mobilicity users will be shuffled to Rogers’ smaller brand, Chat’r Mobile. Mobilicity will continue to accept new users until August 15th, and then customers will slowly be moved over to Chat’r sometime in the fall. Over the upcoming summer, all current users will have the option to browse through exclusively offered Chat’r plans to help customers with transitioning. Unfortunately, Rogers says that currently Mobilicity wireless plans will not be grandfathered in.

Mobilicity Bots

Despite Rogers’ insistence that the new Chat’r plans will offer “similar features and in a lot of cases offer more value,” current customers are reeling from the move. Not only are users likely to lose their unlimited data plans, but many Mobilicity locations will also be closed down due to their proximity to existing Chat’r stores and kiosks.

More than 150,000 current Mobilicity subscribers will be disrupted by this change, and judging by the general reaction of customers, many may be migrating to WIND before the summer is up.

Samsung Foldable Smartphone

Samsung Foldable

It’s well known that Samsung has been trying to produce a successful foldable smartphone for many years now. While we’re not even halfway through 2016, there’s been suggestions of Samsung releasing five new flagship phones in 2017. On the list is: Galaxy S8, S8 edge, Note 7, Note 7 edge, and Galaxy X.

The Galaxy X is expected to be their foldable creation, possibly under the name “Project Valley” as well. Whether it will be a fold down the middle of the phone or have foldable edges, we don’t know yet. However, it’s expected to have at least a 5” 4K display. Some say it would look like a regular phone when folded up, but have the ability to expand in size to transform into a bigger device similar to a tablet when opened up.

We’ve been expecting such an outrageous device from the company for a while now. They’ve created curved TV’s and curved smartwatches. Their flagship phones started having an “edge.” It was only a matter of time before a curved or foldable smartphone was released. These days, it seems like every flagship smartphone is pretty much the same as the next, so we’re really anticipating a big change in the game. What are you expecting to see with the next big thing?

Galaxy Note 7 — Not the 6

Note 7

Instead of the Galaxy Note 6, a news report has revealed that we should be expecting the Galaxy Note 7 instead. For all intents and purposes, it will the exact same phone as what the Note 6 should have been–just rebranded with a higher number.

Samsung reportedly is skipping the 6 number for marketing purposes. Because their Galaxy S lines are now up to the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge, naming the new Note device with a lower number might give customers the impression that the Note 6 is older and therefore not up-to-date. Even if it’s not for marketing purposes, bumping up the number so that both of their flagship devices match would just make sense because they would seem more on equal ground.

Skipping right to the Galaxy Note 7 name also helps the company show that their new device will be significantly more distinguished from the Note 5. It tells us that it will have differences that we may not have expected for the Note 5’s successor. Given the rumours circling about the mysterious foldable Galaxy X phone, it’s fair to wonder whether the new Note will be foldable, as well. Certainly, that feature would separate the Note from their S cousins.

Not only would it help customers see that the Note 7 is a device just as new as the S7, it would also help further distinguish the Note 7 from the Note 5–and while it might seem silly, in terms of marketing strategies, it’s actually quite ingenious. It makes their new phone sound up-to-date as well as “future-proof” their brand. When 2017 rolls around, Apple will be expected to release the Apple iPhone 7 while Samsung would already be on the Note 8. In terms of how a customer is influenced into deciding which is the newest and the best phone, Samsung Galaxy Note 8 would definitely seem like a newer choice than the Apple iPhone 7.

We are still expecting the new Note to have a microSD slot, a 4,000mAh battery, and either 6Gb or 8Gb of RAM. We’re also still hoping it will be IP68-certified, just like the Galaxy S7.

Samsung Galaxy A5

Galaxy A5-3

As the prices of flagship phones soars higher than ever before, some companies have started to focus on their mid-tier phones to include customers who just aren’t ready to spend a thousand dollars on a cell phone. Samsung has decided to rejuvenate the Galaxy A5 by releasing the new 2016 version.

Even as a mid-tier phone, it’s Samsung’s made sure that it’s nothing to scoff at. Released just a little over 4 months ago, it’s great for its price-point. Built from aluminum and glass, it has beautiful chamfered edges with a Gorilla Glass 4 shielding both the front and rear of the phone. It features 2GB of RAM and a 1.6GHz octa-core processor. It comes with 16GB of internal storage, but allows you to expand it with an external microSD card that supports up to 128GB, giving you a total of 144GB of space.

Galaxy A5-4

The new A5 has a 5.2” 1080p display powered by a non-removable 2900mAh battery. With a lower resolution and a bigger battery, the phone should last at least a day on one charge. It comes with dual-SIM capabilities and can accept 2 nano-SIM cards at once. You should be able to use both SIM cards while using a microSD card because it has a dedicated slot for each, unlike a few other dual-SIM devices. While it has a fingerprint sensor, it does not have by-now standard LED notification light.

It runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop right out of the box and comes with TouchWiz. Reports say that it should receive Android Marshmallow in the upcoming days, though. It has a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera, both capable of recording up 1080p video. Unfortunately, the camera focus speed is not nearly as fast as some of Samsung’s flagship phones. However, it makes up for it by having OIS. The fact that it supports multi-tasks and has the speakers located on the bottom of the phone rather than the back helps, as well.

While the A5 can’t quite compare to the newest Galaxy S7, it also comes at a significantly lower price-point. Given what you get for what you pay, the Galaxy A5 is definitely worth checking out–especially if you’re in the market for a mid-tier phone.
