LG Stylus 2

LG Stylus 2

LG’s Stylus, AKA the LG Stylo, was the company’s offer to consumers who wanted a mid-ranged smartphone. Released less than two years ago, it had a 5.5 inch display featuring 540×960 pixels, and supported dual SIM cards. With 1GB of RAM and 8GB of internal memory (expandable with MicroSD cards up to 32GB), it was an okay phone with a decent price. To be honest, it wasn’t a very impressive phone. Even its namesake, the stylus, reminded us of the cheap, soft blunt-ended pen accessories from eBay.

Enter: the LG Stylus 2. Announced earlier last month and predicted to launch before mid-2016, the successor is rumoured to have a bump in every feature, internal and external. It should have a 5.7” display with 1280×720 pixels and 1.5GB of RAM. It’ll feature 16GB of internal memory with a microSD card for additional storage, and a 3000mAh removable battery. Right out of the box, users will get to enjoy Android 6.0 Marshmallow, and 13MP rear camera with LED flash. The secondary, front camera will have 8MP.

Hopefully, the stylus will receive not only a massive make-over, but also an overhaul in functional capabilities, too. While it’s not a high-end superphone, consumers have come to expect a Galaxy Note-like form when it comes to productivity with the addition of a stylus on a mobile phone. At the very least, we hope the pen will feel like an actual utilitarian tool rather than invoke feelings of a cheaply made cell-phone accessory. The first step would be to change the stylus tip.

None of this phone’s features look out of the ordinary. On the surface, the Stylus 2 appears to be a regular, mid-ranged phone with caveats that a buyer can only expect from an inexpensively priced smartphone. However, we have yet to mention the big thing that sets this phone apart from any and all other phones–superphones included.

LG Stylus 2 Dab

The LG Stylus 2 will support DAB+ radio.

What does this mean? It means that radio lovers can rejoice. It means that the people who are short on data will likely flock to this phone. It means that you can tune into radio broadcasts with the included FM radio support. Virtually unheard of since the dawn of smartphones (remember plugging earphones into your brick phone to hear your favourite radio station?), LG has tapped into the past in order to pave the way toward a new future.

Unfortunately, DAB+ is the standard for mainly for countries across Europe, with North America having embraced a different technology for radio. This is why the Stylus 2 will launch only in the UK, Australia, Norway, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, and Belgium so far. If the phone is ever released in North America, it will have to adopt the HD radio standard of North America.

Android N

Android N

Google’s released a developer preview of Android N, the latest version of the Android mobile operating system. We’re familiar with the alphabetical naming system of Android, so with the previous version being called Android Marshmallow, it’s no surprise that the upcoming version will be named after the letter N.

How to try Android N:
If you own a Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 6, a Nexus 9, a Nexus Player, or Pixel C device, you can download the update and put it onto your phone manually, or join Google’s beta-tester program and get the update over the air. However, keep in mind that you update at your own risk! Because this is not a finalized version and is, needless to say, an extremely early and buggy release of the OS, it likely is not very stable or compatible with most of your apps. Even if you don’t have an additional phone to use in case something goes wrong with the Android N device, you can always downgrade at the cost of having all of your data wiped.

If you’re not interested in testing, however, you’ll have to wait for all the wrinkles to get ironed out and the finalized version to be released. To help you get a better idea of Android N without all the headaches of having to go through all the bugs, glitches, and tests, here are 5 of the top features of Android N that we know about so far:

1. Multi-windows
Given that multiple OEM skins (such as Samsung’s TouchWiz) have already been offering multi-window support, it’s no surprise that Android N will, as well. You’ll be able to split your screen to support at least two applications at once, provided those applications support or allow being resized. This is going to be great for picture-in-picture viewing to let you quickly view an email while keeping an eye on a YouTube or Netflix video.

2. Better Battery Life
Introduced with Marshmallow was a feature called Doze, meant to help you save battery life when the phone is idling. Android N is supposed to improve on this feature even more to help your device last even longer when in standby. Night mode is also supposed to make a return. It changes the colour-scheme of your phone to a darker one to cause less strain on your eyes when browsing at night. It’s also customizable to link to the daylight times in your location for further convenience. On certain devices that save power through darker colours, such as Samsung Galaxy phones, Night Mode should help elongate your battery life.

3. Bundled Notifications
To help users de-clutter their notification centers, Android N will feature notification bundling. You’ll be able to group multiple notifications from one app together and expand them by using a two-finger gesture or tapping on specific button.

4. Respond in app
One of the many coveted features for texting applications, Android N users will be able to answer text messages without leaving the screen that they’re currently on. The Android blog calls it Direct Reply for now. When you receive a text message, you’ll be able to choose from Reply, Archive, or Snooze. If you hit Reply, a new line will show up along with your keyboard to let you respond right in the notification itself.

5. Drag and drop text
In split-screen mode, you’ll also be able to drag and drop text between apps. Just highlight the text, hold, and then drag it into the next app over. One caveat so far–though we’re sure it’ll be fixed for the final release–is that you can only drag text that you’ve typed into a textbook, and it only works in certain apps. If this glitch can be fixed, this will be a great complementary feature to multi-window.

Again, if you can’t wait to try these features out for yourself, you can update at any time if you own any of the following devices: Nexus 5X, Nexus 6P, Nexus 6, a Nexus 9, a Nexus Player, or Pixel C device, . However, make sure you’re ready for glitches, bugs, and a multitude of unexpected errors!

We’ll keep you up to date with all of the newest features as we learn more.

Samsung Pay

Samsung Pay

It looks like this will be the year that virtual wallets may actually catch on. After Apple Pay, we talked about the LG White Card, and now let’s take a look at Samsung Pay.

This mobile payment feature will be available later this year to Canadian owners of the Galaxy A5, Note 5, S6, S6 Active, S6 edge, S6 edge+, S7, and the S7 edge. You’ll get to save your credit card onto your phone’s Samsung Pay app, and then tap the phone on supported POS machines to authorize the payment.

A big selling point on Samsung Pay is the vast amount of terminals that will accept the new service. Right now in the US alone, Samsung touts that it works with “more stores than any other mobile payment service.” Arguably more secure than a PIN or password, a fingerprint is required to authorize payments. Another factor that should help Samsung Pay gain traction is the free charging pad that Samsung USA is offering customers when they load their first card. Hopefully, Samsung Canada will offer the same gift to Canadian users!

Currently, the Samsung Pay is supported by Samsung USA through AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, US Cellular, MetroPCs, and Verizon. Some of the major credit and bank cards supported are: Bank of America, American Express, Chase, CITI, PNC, Synchrony, US Bank, and Wells Fargo. A complete list of supported carriers, banks, and merchants are available on their website.

Hopefully when Samsung Pay is released in Canada later this year, a large variety of banks and carriers will be supported as well.

iPhone 7 – What We Expect To See

iPhone 7-3

While the iPhone 7 has not officially been announced yet, the device is most likely going to be available in the fall months of 2016. The iPhone 6S is the current latest model and was released in September of 2015 so a similar release this year is likely with the iPhone 7. With each alternating year, Apple releases an overall new iPhone design so since we had the 6S last year, the iPhone 7 this year should feature quite a few changes from what we have seen in the past. Here is what we expect so far:

The iPhone Will Likely Not Have A Headphone Jack

One of the biggest changes to the iPhone that we expect to see with the iPhone 7 is the removal of the headphone jack. This will be done because Apple reportedly wants to decrease the thickness of the iPhone 7, making it nearly as thin as the latest iPod model. By removing the headphone jack they will free up a lot of internal space so the device can be even thinner but it will require that headphones are connected through the Lightning port or Bluetooth.

iPhone 7-2

Possible Wireless Headphones

Because headphones will no longer have their own audio jack, there have been a few reports that suggest Apple is developing a new set of premium earbuds that will work wirelessly with Bluetooth technology. Unlike traditional Bluetooth headphones, though, there will be no connecting wires between either of ear pieces, similar to what is being developed with the Bragi Dash headphones.

Design Changes

The lightning port will most likely be thinner and the removal of the audio jack will ultimately allow the iPhone 7 to be a lot thinner than what is currently on the market. Apple is likely trying to get the iPhone 7 as thin as the latest iPod which is 6.1mm compared to a depth of 7.3mm for the iPhone 6S Plus that is the latest flagship phone. In addition to shaving the width, we may see he protruding camera retracted back into the iPhone so that it is flush with the body and in place of the old audio jack a second, thinner speaker may be added to the iPhone 7 to allow for stereo audio.

iPhone 7

Potential Dual Camera

Another big change to the iPhone 7 is reportedly dual-camera technology that will give the iPhone 7 (or iPhone 7 Plus) two lenses. After Apple purchased the company LinX Imaging they gained technology that would support this theory. With two lenses, it would give the iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus more capabilities for taking photos, allowing for better low-light photos and granting some features that would be similar to what you expect from DSLR cameras.

Wireless Charging

Since the Lightning port will likely be used as the headphone port as well on the iPhone 7, that means you cannot have headphones plugged in at the same time as you are charging. As a result, there is speculation that the iPhone 7 will have wireless charging capabilities, but Apple may not have finished the technology yet so it could be the iPhone 7S in 2017 before we see this functionality.
