LG G5

LG G5

It’s been confirmed that the LG G5 will be announced on February 21st, and LG has been tweeting hints and teasers about the G5 like they did with the G4, successfully amping up fans and potential fans alike.

LG G5 Design
Expected of the LG G5 is a metal unibody with a detachable bottom to reveal a compartment for the battery. We don’t know yet whether the SIM card slot and microSD slot will be located in the same compartment–or whether it will even feature expandable memory at all–but it would makes sense for the SIM card to be inaccessible except when the battery is removed. If the memory is expandable, though, it wouldn’t seem feasible for the microSD slot to be located under the battery.

It is said to have an iris scanner or a fingerprint scanner, or, as we hope, both. Given that LG’s competitors have been using fingerprint scanners for a while now, a fingerprint scanner would put LG back into the arena onto even ground. An iris scanner, however, would put the G5 ahead of current and rumoured phones alike.

LG G5 Display
We’re expecting a 5.6” display with at least a QHD display. However, with technology enabling companies such as Sony to pack in 4K resolution, it may not surprise many if the G5 came out with one, as well.

Venture Beat mentioned the phone may feature dual screens, similar to the LG V10. This would mean a tiny screen across the top of the phone, on the same level as the camera, strictly for notifications and other tidbits of information. At first glance, it seems a bit gimmicky, so we’ll just have to see what it’s like in a hands-on review.

LG G5-2

LG G5 Hardware and Camera
The phone is rumoured to have Snapdragon 820 and 3GB or 4GB of RAM. It should have 64GB of internal memory, hopefully expandable up to 200GB.

It is said that LG may choose to feature a 16MP rear camera over the originally rumoured 21MP one for the added benefits of 135 degree wide-angle capability. The LG G4 really set the standard high for cellphone cameras, with its f/1.8 16MP camera, so we’re expecting nothing short of excellence for the G5. The front camera should offer 8MP for perfect selfies.

LG G5 Battery
Unfortunately, it looks like the phone may have a smaller battery, rumoured to be 2800mAh. However, with a more efficient processor and Android Marshmallow, it’s likely that it won’t prove to be much difference in terms of daily use. Plus, with a removable battery, it wouldn’t be any issue to carry an external, charged, second battery.

To be officially revealed by LG on February 21st in Barcelona, stay tuned for more!

HTC One M10/Perfume

HTC One M10

A phone that we’re very eager to see this year is the HTC One M10, also named the “Perfume”. Predicted to be officially announced in March, we’ve already seen some speculations make its way around the Internet. However, there’s not too much to go on for now, so keep your eye on our blog for any updates!

It’s pretty safe to say that since one of the first iterations of the HTC One phone, they’ve plateaued quite a bit, especially in comparison to other phones that have been released since. While the One has proven to be a sturdy, reliable, and capable device, it’s not really making the big splash that HTC must want it to. We’ve become too familiar with it and we want more. Fans are certainly hoping for bold and daring design moves from HTC.

Rumours are saying that HTC’s new flagship will be both waterproof and support wireless charging. This isn’t surprising, given that wireless charging is quickly making its way to becoming a new staple, and their rival, the Galaxy S6, has already been utilizing this feature for a year. We are surprised to hear about waterproofing, but we would love to see it become reality. HTC’s One devices sometimes lack features that may seem gimmicky–such as fingerprint readers–but having the phone waterproofed would really boost its popularity with their more rugged fanbase. We’re very curious to see how HTC would execute this, though. If we’ve learned one thing from Samsung, it’s that it’s hard to waterproof phones with metal pieces. On the flip side, however, we see Sony releasing one premium device after another that would survive a few dips in the pool.

There have been reports circulating that state the rear camera would be anywhere from 12MP to 23MP, and would still sport HTC’s own UltraPixel. It’s predicted to come with Android 6 Marshmallow with a version of HTC’s Sense overlaying it.

One of our favourite things about all HTC One devices across the board is their wonderful sound quality. However, it’s possible that we may have to say goodbye to front speakers, because the front speakers take up a lot of space, which proves it to be a design obstacle. If HTC is going to completely refresh the looks of their flagship, it would be hard to work around the large grilles. BoomSound paired with their front speakers are two things that we pray HTC will keep.

The display is rumoured to get beefed up to become 5.2” with QHD AMOLED display. It should have an unremovable battery with a capacity closer to 3000mAh, and it may use USB Type-C.

Unfortunately, we can’t provide more accurate with the speculations. One thing’s for sure, though: we would be pretty disappointed if HTC doesn’t give us a massive overhaul with the new One M10/Perfume. Is there anything in particular that you’d like to see in this new flagship? Let us know!

LG White Card

LG White Card

The new ‘White Card’ is LG’s solution to Apple Pay and Android Pay, but it’s not what you would expect. Unlock virtual wallets and cards, LG’s White Card is an actual card. It has similar dimensions to a regular credit card, with the exception of digital adaptations.

It’s actually a device that stores multiple debit and credit cards at once, giving you the ability to select which card you’d like to use. Its design invokes minimalism. The front of the card features gold contacts, a plus sign, a little display, and two arrow keys. The gold contacts look like they’re for charging the card, the screen to display which card you’re using (and the battery life), and the two arrow keys to choose the card that you’d like to use. Presumably, the plus sign is to add a card.

It’s been mentioned that LG decided on this design to appeal toward folks who are wary of using their smart devices as payment through methods such as NFC. The size and shape of the White Card will hopefully be familiar enough for it to gain traction with users. Plus, the thought of having one card replace all your cards can be quite appealing.

Rumours reveal that the card can be used to make payments at stores as well as act as a debit card for withdrawing cash from ATMs.

50,000 cards have been pre-ordered by LG, with more to follow as they discuss mass production. It’s rumoured that the White Card will be unveiled in March at Barcelona, but initial testing will only be available to South Korea for now. Whether the device will support swipe, tap, and PIN codes is unknown.
