Galaxy S7 Rumours

Samsung Galaxy

It’s almost been a year since Samsung’s Galaxy S6 has been in production, so naturally, the Galaxy S7 rumour mill has been churning stronger than ever. Let’s take a moment to look at some of the things we’ve heard.

It is said–and extremely likely–that the Galaxy S7 will be, like the Galaxy S6, released with an Edge model as its sibling. They should both be running Android 6.0 Marshmallow. It’s strange, but it seems like the Galaxy S7 will feature a smaller 5.1 inch screen while the S7 Edge will have anywhere between a 5.5 inch and a 5.7 inch screen. However, apparently Samsung may also release a third variant: the Galaxy S7 Plus. We’re not quite sure that we’re ready to believe that Samsung is going to take on the “Plus” name, given that it would be reminiscent of Apple. It may be that sightings of the three differently sized devices are the result of various prototypes.

Resolutions should be remaining the same, but we’re not surprised. At this point, can screens really get any better while being discernable to the human eye? If there are no advancements in display resolution, we won’t be perplexed.

Marshmallow OS

What we are interested in, though, is the rumours that VentureBeat was told about the newest Galaxy devices getting back the capability to expand memory externally. This would mean that consumers would again be able to utilize the gorgeous Samsung screens to its fullest potential through unlimited multimedia that can be added externally.

Unfortunately, it looks like removable batteries will not be making a comeback. However, rumours do say that the phones will feature much larger internal, embedded batteries. Will that be enough to persuade customers who swear by the power of external batteries, though?

The loss of water and dust resistance in the S6 lines really hit fans hard. If some of the rumours are correct, Samsung may have plans to bring this well-loved feature back to the S7 phones.

Interestingly enough, the camera is predicted to go from 16MP to 12MP. However, we all know that megapixels alone do not make for a great camera, so we’ll have to wait and find out what goodies Samsung has packed in order to make up for the lost MP.

The biggest three complaints that we’ve heard nonstop about the Galaxy S6 were:
Non-removable battery
Lack of external memory card capabilities
Loss of water and dust resistance

We’re sure that a lot of fans would return to the Galaxy phones without hesitation as long as Samsung were to bring these features back–while keeping the phones up to specifications, of course–but how possible are these ideas? Are they realistic and practical in any sense? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Blackberry Venice

Blackberry Venice

Rumors of Blackberry’s first ever Android device has been the talk of the town for some time now, and it looks like fans are finally getting cause for celebration. The new Blackberry device, nicknamed Blackberry Venice, has recently had its photos leaked online.

It looks like what we have here will be a slider phone that’s not unlike the design of the previous Torch lines. In the leaked photos, it certainly looks fantastic and sleek. The screen is supposed to be 5.4” with a slide-out that extends from the bottom to make the phone significantly longer. It contains the physical, iconic Blackberry keyboard that utilizes the sliding mechanism. If it feels anything like any other Blackberry keyboards, the typing experience should be nothing less than smooth and excellent. It’s also supposed to have a virtual keyboard that shows up when the QWERTY keyboard is hidden. The software for their virtual keyboard wasn’t very good on the Blackberry Torch devices, but we’re expecting it to be better on the Venice. This is especially so since it runs Android, and should, therefore, be compatible with Google Keyboard or other third party boards.

It’s likely that the Venice will not feature Blackberry’s other iconic item: the trackpad. Of course, with a 5.4” phablet-like screen, I think you’d find that you’d rarely need it anyway. However, sources say that we will instead be able to perform the same scrolling function the keyboard itself. Apparently all you’ll have to do is touch the top of the keyboard with a finger and just brush or slide your finger down and browsers (and other applications) will scroll accordingly.

Blackberry Venice-2

The leaked photos also seem to suggest two curved edges on the phone, to which rumors are saying will be used to display hubs or other notifications by swiping in toward the center of the screen from the side–similar to how Samsung’s Galaxy Edge devices operate. However, we can’t be sure that this particular feature will be on the final device, as some photos seem to have curved edges while others don’t.

The phone is said to have an 18MP rear camera with an LED-flash, Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 808 processor, and 3GB of RAM. It should also have a 3000mAh battery, but whether this will be removable, we aren’t sure yet. Apparently, when the phone boots up, it displays bugdroid holding a shield. The bugdroid image appears to be Blackberry’s nod to customers’ emphasis on the importance of information security. Based on Blackberry’s Chief Executive Officer John Chen, Blackberry’s main issue was to make a secure Android device, explaining why it took until now for an Android Blackberry phone to enter the market.

Based on online activity from past, present, and potential Blackberry users, it sounds like this phone will have a bigger niche than other Blackberry flagships have received so far. Many have said that this is the phone that finally sparked their excitement after a year of the same features presented by different brands. Blackberry is certainly making a splash by being bold enough to come out with something different when everyone else is the same.

Data-Only Microsoft SIM Card

Microsoft

Microsoft has recently come out with what may be one of the biggest game-changers in the mobile world, if their newly released Windows 10 application is any indication. It looks like their acquisition of Nokia (remember Nokia?) was just the beginning of much larger plans, because they are planning to supply consumers with data-only SIM cards.

Certain Windows 10 devices that accept SIM cards should soon be able to get online anymore regardless of WiFi availability. Of course, eligible devices would require a Microsoft SIM card in order to do so. Once you have the SIM card, the Microsoft Cellular Data app says that you’ll be able to purchase data on-the-go as you need it with only your Microsoft account. Here’s the kicker: there will be “no fixed contract[s] and no long term commitments to a mobile network operator.”

This is not a strange move, and it certainly has been well accepted. What Microsoft is doing is attempting to penetrate a very closed off market to provide customers with more affordable options. If all goes well and Microsoft launches their Microsoft SIM cards, it might cause an enormous change in the plans that service providers offer.

Currently, mobile-data is one of the most coveted–and therefore, most expensive–services. In Canada, Rogers, Bell, and Telus are the holy trinity of service providers, so there’s not much competition, allowing prices to be sky-high. If consumers are offered the option of purchasing mobile-data on-the-go with no contracts or long term commitments, the effects could cause enough competition for users to finally see a drop in the outrageous prices.

While we have yet to see evidence of the Microsoft SIM card, the publishing of their Cellular Data Windows 10 application–along with details on how to access their data network–seems to be a good sign. According to the app, they currently only have domestic plans, international roaming options will be available soon.

E-SIM

Sim Cards

With so much new technology being developed, we have the advent of what’s called the “e-SIM card.” “E-SIM” stands for “embedded SIM,” or “electronic SIM,” which simply means that the SIM card will come build into the device and not be removable. With all the varying sizes of SIM cards currently available, the e-SIM would be extremely practical in standardizing the use of SIM cards all over the world.

The e-SIM can be programmed with information to operate under other carriers with methods as simple as a phone call to your carrier. This means less hassle for customers when trying to switch service providers or phones, because you wouldn’t have to fumble around with the little SIM card, make sure that you have the correctly sized SIM Card when switching devices, or purchase new SIM cards for each new provider.

For example, if you were to upgrade from the older iPhone, which uses a micro-SIM card, to the newest iPhone ,which currently uses a nano-SIM card, you would either have to pay someone to professionally cut your SIM card down to size for you, or go through the hassle of acquiring a new correctly sized SIM. While this may sound like a relatively simple process to go through, it can be more complicated than necessary–especially if customers were not informed of possible complications with SIM card sizing.

Currently, Apple is trying out their “Apple SIM,” while Samsung has e-SIM cards in some of their wearable technology.

We think that with the advancement of the e-SIM card, a whole new world of possibilities opens up. For example, if the SIM card is programmable, it’s not unlikely that it could render dual-SIM phones obsolete. Who’s to say that you won’t be able to operate both your private and business phone lines on the same device?
