What You Need to Know About the Facebook Messenger App

The giant social networking site Facebook was launched on the 4th of February 2004 with a mission to enable people all over the world the ability to share personal and professional attributes with others from all over the world. Facebook thus allows you to connect with close friends and family, to get a glimpse of current world affairs as well as express and share information that matter to them.

As the world became more accustomed to using mobile devices, Facebook sought to capitalize on creating and launching a downloadable mobile phone application in line with the company’s mission statement. Unfortunately, most bloggers and journalists spread erroneous information on the standalone mobile messaging application launched in 2011.

To begin with, most Facebook enthusiasts with mobile devices got the impression that the standalone mobile messaging app was being forcibly imposed on users. More so, given the current situation at the time when the US government and other developed countries were working to profile individuals under the guise of counter-terrorism raised privacy concerns among Facebook users. A great number of individuals were negatively influenced by rumors published in various media outlets to believe that the Facebook messenger app as an invasion to privacy.

Facebook Like Logo

For instance, one of the rumors suggested that the app took over the entire control of your mobile device such that Facebook could call your phone numbers, relay test messages without consent. Such erroneous and misinformed rumors only serve to limit your ability to exploit the benefits that the application has to offer.

The truth about the Facebook Messenger mobile device application is that it is only as invasive as the main Facebook software used on desktops. This misconception arose from the fact that when you install the App, a message greeting explaining that application requires your permission to access device components like the microphone, contacts, camera and other data.

Like And Share Thumb

Another rumor concerning the app is that if you seek to relay a message to your Facebook pals you have to employ it. The truth is that the company’s terms of services are similar to all its mobile device apps as well as the primary application as seen on desktops. The long list of permissions requested when downloading and subsequently installing the app are common in other applications for mobile devices as well. In essence, the app only uses the components and the data in your device if you agree to it and as such, Facebook has no authority to access any data  in or on your device.

At the heart of the rumors negatively impacting on Facebook users is that most mobile devices users are limited to either using android based operating systems or the Apple OS. The Android OS has a rather confusing element in the manner with which apps requests for the owner’s permission to work. For instance, each time you download and subsequently install some new app from the Google Play Store, a rather long listing of app associated permissions requests are displayed on the screen. This presents many users with uncomfortable situations though it is recommended that users should take the time to understand the app permission before installation. Apple OS on the other hand employs a system of granular permissions allowing for each new permission request employed as the app is being used.

Therefore, before using the features of an app on an Apple device, you have to consent to a permission request. The problem is not the Facebook messenger app but the android OS which Google is currently working to correct in its upcoming upgraded version.

Managing Your Mobile Data Securely

Many people are unaware of the risks that are currently present in their use of mobile phones. From hackers to thieves, and other various threats, you need to be aware how to keep your phone data safe from threats. You also want to keep everything on your phone safe without slowing it down and reducing functionality. In this article you will learn how to safeguard your email/text messages, personal information, and see various solutions that provide security for your business needs with sensitive data.

Secure Wifi

Software Updates

The most important thing you should keep an eye on how recent your software is. Old software can create holes in your security. You should update the operating system as soon as a new update is available. The alerts on your mobile device that notify you to update the apps and operating system are usually serious updates that are responses to newly discovered threats. The updates serve to close the threats down as quickly s possible. Specifically, updates close security holes and other backdoors that hackers would use to access your phone without your permission.

Stay Aware

It’s important to stay aware of apps and links that you don’t know, or receive from people you don’t know. You should never download apps or click on any kind of links in your email, social media channels, or texts, without knowing the source first. These clicks may lead may lead you viruses, malware, spyware, or bots that usually serve to compromise personal data.

In addition to watching out for links, you should avoid unsecured Wi-Fi networks. If connect to any unsecured, and public Wi-Fi network, do not enter passwords or try to access your personal data. Sometimes hackers use unsecure networks as an easy means entry to your device. They can watch your actions and log all your activity. Brows carefully.

unsecure-network

You should always turn off Bluetooth when you are not using it. Bluetooth is technology that will create a wireless connection with your phone and other devices or phones. If you are not using an enabled device at the moment, turn your Bluetooth off to maintain a secure device. Stay aware of the status of your Bluetooth.

Sometimes its good to check the permissions of apps that are accessing your private data. Run a check on all your apps, and if they are accessing too much data you can revoke permissions for information those apps don’t actually need in order to operate. Sometimes an app can be recording your actions and collecting vast amounts of data on you in the background. Stay aware of your apps.

Keeping Data Safe

Back up your data to a cloud server in case something happens to your phone. This way you can access all your information. You should pay attention to your phone bills because sudden increases in data usage can indicate problems. Any interruptions in service or additional texts can also be seen as a tip that your device security is compromised in some way.

It is always smart to consider mobile security software for your device. There are various sources to get the right antivirus programs that will keep your device free from attacks. There are also different security apps that you can download for your phone. However you should research these apps thoroughly before you decide which one is the right one for you.

The first step to keep your device safe is to be aware of the possible opportunities that exist for malicious attackers. Knowledge of the weaknesses will give you the ability to take the right precautions. Take the time to learn your device.

Google’s Nexus Event

If you’re something of a phone geek or a Google Nexus fan, San Francisco will be the place to be on September 29th. This time around, it’s rumoured that the technological mogul will be unveiling two new devices to the Nexus line built by two companies: LG and Huawei. LG will be providing the smaller version of the Nexus while Huawei will be building its bigger brother.

For years, Google’s Nexus phones have been the golden standard for the purest form of the Android software. Other companies, such as Samsung and HTC, add their own “skin” and characteristics to Android in order to better suit the devices. For example, Samsung’s TouchWiz on their Note series supports S-Pen features while stock Android does not. This year, the new Nexus phones will be the first to support Android’s newest software update, rumored to be called Marshmallow.

We’re a little surprised that Google chose Huawei to build its phablet flagship, especially since many were disappointed by the Nexus 6. We originally thought that they would have chosen a bigger, more well known company for its arguably more important release in order to make up for the dissatisfaction surrounding the previous release. However, Huawei has been trying to break into the market for more premium devices, so this may be their breakthrough moment.

Google seems to be coming back to LG: with the Nexus 4, Nexus 5, and now the newest Nexus. Consumers have demonstrated satisfaction with LG’s work, so Huawei will have some big shoes to fill.

Both phones are expected to have a fingerprint sensor. The LG one is expected to have a polycarbonate backing, whereas the Huawei version is rumored to feature a 5.7” display. Nexus phones have traditionally been more affordable than other flagship phones, but we don’t quite have a price range just yet.

Either way, we’re looking forward to hearing more about the new Nexus iterations. Let us know your thoughts about these upcoming phones in the comments below!

Lenovo PHAB Plus

Lenovo is breaking their way into the phablet game with their recent releases, the PHAB and PHAB Plus. Everyone made fun of Samsung when they ventured into the large phone niche with the release of their Galaxy Note, but now one of the biggest PC moguls have named their phones after the category itself. PHAB of course, stands for “phablet”. The PHAB Plus is a 6.8” phone with a 1080p IPS display, while the original PHAB sports an even larger 6.98” display with lower specifications. Let us take a moment to mourn the days where a 5” phone was considered monstrous and abnormal, and a 7” display belonged strictly in the tablet division.

For just $299, the PHAB Plus has a slick metallic unibody that is strongly reminiscent of the iPhone’s design. It is very slim and, as an added bonus, the camera at the back is flush with the body, unlike the trend that Samsung and iPhone have been following. This means that your phone will sit nice and flat on a table.

It contains a non-removable 3500mAh battery, 32GB of internal memory, and the Snapdragon 615 processor. We’re not expecting it to handle everything you throw at it, but it’ll handle a significantly substantial amount and do what you need it to. That’s probably why Lenovo threw in the ability to take additional external memory. With the capability of utilizing external microSD cards, the extra screen estate means it is a very capable device for watching shows, movies, and other videos.

It has a 13MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera, specifications that reflect its low price tag. It’ll sport 2GB of RAM and run Android 5.0 Lollipop. Despite its big size, Lenovo is aware that not every consumer can handle the entire phone with one hand. While Android on the PHAB Plus will, for the most part, be as close to stock as possible, it has a few features to help with accessibility. For example, the display will shrink to one side of the screen so that you can handle it with one hand. More interestingly, it supports dual-SIM so that you can effectively use two different phone numbers on the device. This is especially useful for users who primarily rely on their phones for business or work–eliminating the need for carrying two phones.

The original PHAB phone retails for $179 and is significantly less impressive. However, if the specs suit your needs, then it really is a smart buy. It features the same specifications on its camera, but with only 1GB of RAM, a slower processor, and–surprisingly– a bigger screen with lower pixel density and an inferior 720p IPS display. The battery is bumped up to 4250mAh to keep up with the bigger display.

Unfortunately, both of these phones are not available in North America, so you’ll have to go through other channels to acquire one. Have either of these devices caught your eye? Let us know in the comments below!

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+

It really seems like just yesterday that people were complaining about Samsung’s lack of premium devices. Now, we practically have a whole line available to choose from!

Design is such an important factor when it comes to cell phones. For most people, cell phones have almost become an extension of yourself, so you naturally want it to reflect who you are.
Lamentations regarding the plastic, fake feeling of their Samsung phones are always likely to come up when asked their feelings about their phones. While the Galaxy flagship phones have always had top-notch specifications, their external design always lacked a little something special. With the recent release of the new Galaxy devices–made of all metal and glass–completely sleek and sexy, Samsung has completely turned things around and entered a new ballgame. Just recently, we were introduced to the newly released Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 edge+.

We took a look at the S6 edge when it first came out, so let’s take a moment to see some differences between the S6 edge and the new S6 edge+.

In comparison, the phones are really only just slightly different. Both devices have a 1440 x 2560 display, with the edge having a 5.1” screen and the edge+ featuring a 5.7” one to join the world of phablets. The pixel density goes from 577ppi to 518ppi with the advancement in screen size. Of course, the drop in density isn’t going to be a huge deal because 518ppi is still highly respectable. In fact, I’m sure that even if the two phones were placed next to each other, you wont notice the difference.

Both phones run Android 5.1 Lollipop and the updated, cleaner version of TouchWiz. The edge+ currently have some features that the S6 edge doesn’t. For example, if you have the edge+, you’ll get the ability connect your phone to your computer or tablet to answer calls, texts, and backup data. You also get other goodies like more manual settings and control over camera settings. However, it’s likely that the S6 edge will receive most–if not all–of the new features that the edge+ through later software updates.

They also share the same processor, Samsung’s own Exynos 7420 processor, but the edge+ features 4GB of RAM over the S6 edge’s 3GB. The extra GB of RAM will really help customers utilize the additional screen estate of the S6 edge+ with multi-tasking or applications running in the background.

While the edge+ supports LTE-A, it loses the infrared blaster that turns your phone into a universal remote. The two phones share the same physical camera in terms of sensor size and megapixels, both sitting at 16MP in the rear and 5MP in the front. The edge+ has a lot more support for control over photos. The biggest upgrade has to be that you’ll have full control over shutter speed and take RAW photos. Both phones have OIS and wide aperture to allow for as much light as possible in darkly lit environments.

Being a bigger phone, the S6 edge+ naturally received a significant upgrade in battery capacity, as well. Instead of the little 2650mAh that the S6 Edge carries, users of the edge+ now have 3000mAh at the tips of their fingers.

Unsurprisingly, the battery is still unremovable and the memory is still not-expandable. The edge features of the phones have not improved much since the last iteration, and still feels like more of a gimmick than anything that could really prove to be a significant part of your daily adventures.

Many will say that the S6 edge+ is simply a bigger S6 edge, but it’s important to remember the amount of productivity you can get out of the extra screen estate and beefed specs. They’re the same phone without really being the same phone.
