Microsoft Lumia 940 XL

At a Glance:
Microsoft’s rumoured latest flagship phone is the Lumia 940 XL. It should have a 5.7” display with 1440 x 2560 resolution–no news about the PPI yet. It should run Windows 10 and use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810. It’ll also have a 20-24MP camera that’ll have a Carl Zeiss lens and triple LED flash. No news about the battery yet, but it’ll have 32GB of internal storage and allow for memory expansion.

Body & Display
While we don’t have explicit details about its weight and dimensions yet, sources say that the phone will be slim and be made of polycarbonate. This in particular struck us as interesting because rumors are saying that the phone will actually cost more than the iPhone 6. Now, many of us have had our feathers ruffled at the premium price of the iPhone 6, but just as many of us soothed those feathers with the premium build of the iPhone. You can say whatever you want about the iPhone but you can’t argue that it isn’t beautifully built. With the Lumia 940 XL, despite all the (rumored) technology that it will be packed with, we suspect that sales will be hindered by the choice of polycarbonate when so many flagships have jumped ship for metal bodies (think Samsung Galaxy S6, for example).

Microsoft didn’t just give the phone an XL name–they gave it extra large features, too. It has a 5.7 inch screen with a 1440 x 2560 display. This is the same resolution that the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 has, and the Note 4 has been named many times the phone with the best display so far. If Microsoft packs in the same number of PPI for the 940 XL, then it might persuade people to purchase the phone despite its plastic body.

Camera
If the display doesn’t get you to buy the phone, the camera likely will. It looks like when Microsoft acquired Nokia, they did not abandon Nokia’s legacy of incredible cameras on cell phones. There’s a regular 5MP camera in the front and a 20-24MP rear camera with Carl Zeiss lens and PureView technology as well as a triple LED flash. We don’t know for sure yet whether there will be any extra goodies to play with for the front camera–however, judging by previous phones, we’re confident that there’s a lot more in store in terms of the cell phone camera.

A very intriguing rumor to note is that we’re hearing the Lumia will feature an iris scanner. If this information is true, then Microsoft will have completely skipped the fingerprint scanner and beat out every other flagship in the game, increasing security features to include scanning your eye for authorization.

What is PureView? PureView technology is Nokia’s (now Microsoft’s) brand name for better cameras on camera phones. What it generally does is use something called “oversampling” to utilize more pixels per one pixel used by a generic cameraphone. This results in higher quality photos, better zooming and cropping, and significantly higher quality in darker environments.

Battery & Processor & Memory
We don’t have confirmation of a battery size or life yet, but it looks like the XL will use Snapdragon 810, have 3GB of RAM, 32GB of internal memory, and have the capacity to accept external memory through micro SD cards.

Suffice it to say, we’re very pleased with the decision to include expandable memory. While many others have decided to forgo this feature (I’m looking at you, Samsung!), Microsoft has given their users the ability to choose their own storage. This will also allow its users to fully utilize the phone for entertainment purposes to enjoy the big phablet-sized screen. Whether it’s saving the photos you’ll surely take with the Zeiss camera or loading movies and music videos, the choice is in your hands.

That’s all we really have for now. Let us know your thoughts on the Lumia 940 XL!

MasterCard Selfies

Remember when Samsung allowed you to use face recognition to unlock your phone? MasterCard just took it one step further by allowing customers to authorize payments. Given that “selfies” are the current trend, MasterCard is confident that their new feature is going to be immensely popular and embraced.

The credit card company believes that people have enough passwords to memorize without needing to remember another one just to authorize the payment for something like online shopping. Passwords can also be subjected to security breaches, a problem that especially affects those who use the same password for everything (not required).

To use the process in their app: the customer must bring the phone to eye level. It will prompt the user to blink, at which point the app will take a photo. The information is then sent to MasterCard’s servers to compare with the image stored. If it matches, then the payment will be authorized. The big selling point of this is the blinking motion that the user must make; this is supposed to help with protecting the user from fraudsters utilizing still images for the authorization of fraudulent transactions.

MasterCard has partnered up with most of the major superphone companies to implement this in an effort for the most seamless and accessible product available. This means that users of Samsung, iPhone, Blackberry, and even Microsoft will receive support the new app. It will also support fingerprint scanning on those devices that have the feature.

One worry about having this new “selfie” payment is about the information that’s stored in the MasterCard servers. What if they were to be hacked? Is there anything that could be done if someone were to get their hands on the files of everyone’s face data? Another concern is the blinking feature. Just because it prevents still photos, doesn’t mean it can prevent motion pictures. Of course, someone would have to have too much time on their hands in order to create or find a short video clip that blinked exactly at the correct time, but it’s still not something to be dismissed lightly.

They currently testing out their new feature with 500 users, and will be looking toward broader ranged testing soon.

It’s 2015, so nothing really beats shopping online by using your credit card through a phone that authorizes the payment with a selfie. Let us know all about what you think of these MasterCard Selfies in the comments down below!

iOS 9

iOS 9 is set to be released for public access this fall. It will be available to all of the iPads going back to the iPad 2, including the original iPad Air and iPad mini. Surprisingly, the update will include even the older iPhone 4S as well as the iPod Touch (5th generation). Unfortunately, we can’t tell whether it will cause the older hardware to lag once updated to the new, more capable software.

Siri
Siri understands a lot more now in terms of context. Theoretically, it can pick up the topic of your conversation with friends through iMessage and use that information when you ask Siri to remind you of it later on. This seems like a huge advancement in virtual assistants and can mean a lot more in productivity in terms of utilizing Siri.

it is also more location intelligent and can pick up information based on where you are, similar to how Google Now “remembers” places you regularly visit, as well as pull up coupons for restaurants you’re close to. Plug your phone into the car and it’ll bring back the last audiobook you were listening to, or tell you when to leave in order to get somewhere on time.

News & Wallet
Apple’s replaced Passbook with Wallet, and Newsstand with News. If you’re familiar with Samsung’s Flipboard, this is sort of what you’re getting with Apple News. It effectively consolidates all of your news–any breaking stories and updates from sources that you’ve shown interest in.

Wallet is significantly more inclusive now with support for many credit cards as well as store credit cards. It also supports rewards cards, like Cineplex Scene, Starbucks, and Walgreens Balance. Double clicking the home button when the phone is locked will take you immediately to Wallet, allowing you to authorize purchases through Apple Pay.

iPads & Multi-Tasking
iPads finally receive true multi-tasking. At the moment, Apple only allows up to two applications to be opened and worked on at once. There’s three methods of accessing multi-tasking with iPads.

The first way is to use Slide Over. You get a second app in the side that you can use, for example, iMessage or Notes. Once you’re done, you can just slide it away.

Split View allows users to split the screen in half, utilizing two apps side by side, with half the screen dedicated to each app.

The third method of multi-tasking is called Picture-in-Picture. Similar to the way that YouTube works, Picture-in-Picture allows you to put videos and FaceTime calls to the corner of your display by pressing the Home button. In this mode, you can operate any other app and the video will stay accessible in the corner for you.

Features
You know all those strange numbers that you get from telemarketers? Apple has recognized that this has become a regular nuisance, so your iPhone will now dive into your emails to see whether it can recognize the unknown phone number. Whether this will actually be useful for their non-business consumers, we will have to see. However, I can already see this being useful for making sales when purchasing locally (ie, Craigslist).

The Notes app has also received an upgrade, becoming more like Google Keep. You can now add photos, maps, URLs, or create to-do lists, too.

Apple Maps has always been the default navigation application used by Siri. With iOS 9, the maps will now include public transportation routes. It’s hard not to draw comparisons to Google, but how can I not when I’ve been using Google Maps for such a long time to search for car, walk, and bus routes? According to Apple, their navigation app will now include public transportation stations and lines, as well as allow you to plan routes from A to B. You’ll also gain the feature to search for nearby entertainment and food, which adds huge usability and practicality to Apple’s Maps.

Is there anything we’ve missed? It might not be most revolutionary update yet, but it sure seems like Apple has packed in a few features that users have been yearning after for quite some time. How do you feel about iOS 9? Let us know in the comments below!
