Introducing the Motorola Nexus 6

The honour of building Google’s newest Nexus phone was given to Motorola this year. This phone comes with a significant boost in size from its predecessor, putting it into the category of “phablet” phones. With the size increase comes other features that make this phone a formidable competitor to other leading phablets such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 and the iPhone 6 Plus.

The Nexus 6 is undoubtedly a two handed phone. It has a 6” display sandwiched between an aluminium metal frame backed by hard, smooth plastic. Motorola stayed with away from other material such as wood, faux leather, and soft plastic, but it doesn’t mean that the phone is harder to grip or any more slippery. The phone feels good in hand thanks to the subtly curved back, which rests nicely in your palm. The premium in-hand feeling is also backed by how heavy it is—at 184 grams, it weighs more than other phones such as the Note 4 or the One Plus One.

It has an LED light indicator, but it is oddly not a function available to users until the phone has been rooted. It also has a ridged power button similar to the one found on the Moto X. It will prove useful in making sure you hit the power rather than the volume rocker. Unsurprisingly, this phone is also only water resistant rather than water and dust proof.

It will be available in Cloud White or Midnight Blue.

The phone packs in 2560×1440 with 493 PPI pixel density in the 6” display, wrapped up by Gorilla Glass 3. Although it’s not the best out there, it’s certainly still a gorgeous screen; no one can say that the Nexus 6 has a lacklustre display. Given that it’s also entered the phablet category, owners of this phone will often find themselves more often reaching for their Nexus 6 rather than a tablet or laptop for casual browsing.

This phone comes with a Qualcomm SnapDragon 805 quad-core processor. It’s not as new or as fancy as the SnapDragon 810, but because the device runs pure Android 5.0, there’s no reason that it’s not good enough to keep the phone running beautifully smooth. It has 3GB of RAM and does not have expandable storage; users will need to choose between 32GB or 64GB of internal storage.

However, despite having a larger screen and an older processor, the phone has an impressive battery life. Its 3220mAh battery can be charged for 6 hours worth of life in just 15 minutes thanks to Motorola’s Turbo Charge. The Nexus 6 also supports wireless charging right out of the box, meaning you can top up the juice anytime there is QI inductive charger available. This should prove to be useful, given that the battery is sealed in the phone. Users don’t need to purchase a separate Turbo Charger, but will need to buy wireless charging accessories separately.

The new Nexus does not come with the popular Active Display found on the Moto X. Active Display was well loved due to its ability to show basic information on the dimmed screen when a hand was waved over the the sensors.

This phone comes with front-facing speakers that are reportedly almost as good as the HTC One M9’s BoomSound. We are very pleased to see that this phone has front-facing speakers because we’ve been waiting for companies to follow in HTC’s footsteps in terms of sound. With this phone, we will no longer have to tilt it and ourselves at an awkward angle just to watch a video and hear the sound.

The phone ships with stock Android 5.0 Lollipop. It is a both lightweight and completely free of bloatware, meaning it doesn’t have the clutter that TouchWiz or Sense have. It is clean and pure and not expected to have any lag at all. Another advantage of being a Nexus phone means that users will be amongst the first to receive updates when Google rolls them out.

The Nexus 6’s camera doesn’t look too impressive on paper, but in action, it fares well against even the best cameras. It features a 13MP Sony rear camera with f/2.0 aperture. Photos taken with this camera feature very realistic colours, so coupled with optical image stabilization, you can’t go wrong. This is an unquestionable upgrade from the Nexus 5 camera, and it definitely holds its own against other cameras with higher MP counts.

Overall, we think that the Nexus 6 is a great addition to the world of phablets even though it doesn’t have the most impressive specifications on paper. This phone has good battery life, a very nice screen, and a comparable camera. Bare Android looks and performs very well on the Nexus 6 and the front speakers are almost as good as the M9’s. This is a phone that has evolved significantly from its predecessor, but it’s far from taking the throne for being the best phablet of 2015. However, being the best of the best might not have been Motorola’s end-goal. If they had attempted to make the best phablet, they might not have been able to keep the price reasonable. We aren’t disappointed with the Nexus 6, and we aren’t disappointed with Motorola; Motorola has done a good job carrying on the Nexus name.

Introducing the LG G4

LG’s newest G4 phone hasn’t even been officially announced and it’s already causing some stir in the mobile world. It was not a part of the Mobile World Congress, but we’re expecting its announcement to be as soon as April 28th. Leaks with fragmented information have been available for some time now, so we’ve gone ahead and compiled some of the bigger rumours in order to help you decide on how you feel about this phone.

We are hoping that LG will ditch the G3’s metal effect in exchange for actual metal on the body. We don’t have news yet of the weight, but if the phone is built with metal, it will no doubt have a premium feel when in users’ hands. If cell phone case renderers are accurate, it’ll mean that the G4 will come with a bigger camera lens and the familiar rear situated power button and volume rocker. Given that we’ve seen a ridiculous number of images that were likely faked, we’re not comfortable with drawing a conclusion on what it will look like just yet. There’s currently no updated accurate information on how the body will look, seeing as rumours have claimed both a radically different design as well as one that is similar to the G3.

There are many conflicting sources when it comes to the all important screen. Earlier this week, there was a leaked GFXBench report illustrating the supposed specifications of this phone. According to the report, the phone has either a 5.5 or 5.6 inch screen with 2560 x 1440 at 534 PPI pixel density. We think that the extra screen estate would be nice, but unfortunately, we’ve also heard sources stating that it might have a 5.3 inch screen instead. OnLeaks from Twitter attempted to prove the curved screen by drawing a straight line onto a leaked image. Based on LG’s past experience with curved screens, it’s no surprise that their newest flagship phone may tout a slight curve.

We’ve speculated that the phone will contain a processor that will equal other 2015 flagship phones, such as the Snapdragon 810. However, the GFXBench report claims otherwise. The report says that the G4 will receive a downgrade, sporting a Qualcomm Snapdragon 808 (which is all around less powerful and impressive than the Snapdragon 810). Since there are often many fake reports released, we’re hoping that the information about the processor is incorrect. It’s also rumoured to come with 4GB of RAM and run Android Lollipop right out of the box.

The camera is another area where we found a lot of controversy. We’ve seen sources stating that the G4’s primary camera will receive an upgrade from 13MB to 15MP, 16MP, and even 20MB. We briefly discussed earlier this week how—even with 20.7MP—the M9 had a lackluster camera, demonstrating that megapixels don’t mean everything. Even if the G4 were to come with 20MB, we hope that LG will also include advanced technology for improved photos—such as lower aperture, optical image stabilization, and dual LED flash.

We’ve also read that LG might include a G Stylus with the G4, but we think that the practicality of a pen will depend on the size of the screen and what technology they pack it in with.

A few things we’d personally like to see:

– A real metal chassis that will feel weighted and premium in your hand
– A bigger battery with a power saving mode
– Wireless charging
– Water and dust resistance

What are some things you’d like to see on the LG G4?

The LG G4 will be available soon. You can expect to get it from most of the bigger carriers such as AT&T, T-Mobile, Rogers, Bell, Telus, and Virgin, but they will come locked to that network. In order to unlock it, you’ll need to either contact your carrier or use Cellunlocker.net We provide you with the same code that a carrier does.

UNLOCK LG G4

Samsung Galaxy S6 vs HTC One M9

Earlier this month, we looked at the latest phones from Samsung and HTC. Both phones were revealed at the Mobile World Congress early in March, so let’s take a look at how they compete with each other.

DESIGN

Galaxy S6: Corning Gorilla Glass 4 front and back with aluminum sides. Weighs 138 g and is 6.8 mm in width. Bottom facing speakers. Heart rate monitor and finger print scanner.
HTC One M9: Full aluminum unibody weighing 157 g. 9.6 mm in width. Front facing speakers.

The Galaxy line was completely revamped by Samsung with the release of the Galaxy S6. Finally ditching the plastic and faux leather, the S6 comes with a gorgeous front and back held together by a classy metal trim. It’s also incredibly light and thin, meaning it may be harder to grip. Samsung has moved the speakers from behind the phone to the bottom of the phone, significantly increasing sound volume, quality, and practicality. The S6 also sees the return of the heart rate monitor and an upgraded finger print scanner. Owners will now be able to tap and hold their fingers rather than fight with the awkward positioning of the swiping motion previously required.

The One M9 stuck with its well known and loved full metal body. This time around, HTC actually shrunk the phone a little (in comparison to its predecessor), and made it a little thicker. This new design is meant to make the phone easier to grip, given the complaints that customers had about the M8 slipping out of hands. The front facing speakers are now louder, more vibrant, and has more bass. We don’t think there’s any current competition for HTC’s BoomSound.

SCREEN

Galaxy S6: Super AMOLED 5.1 inch screen with about 70% of screen-to-body ratio. 1440 x 2560 pixels at about 577 ppi pixel density. Shielded by Corning Gorilla Glass 4.
HTC One M9: Super LCD3 5 inch screen with about 68% of screen-to-body ratio. 1080 x 1920 pixels at about 441 ppi pixel density. Shielded by Corning Gorilla Glass 4.

Samsung stuck with a 5.1 inch display with the S6, but packed a lot more pixels to up the pixel density. It’s reported that approximately 70% of the phone’s front is the display. This means that the borders surrounding the display are quite thin, leaving its users the nice impression of an bigger display protected by the latest Corning Gorilla Glass 4.

The One M9 has a smaller display with a smaller screen-to-body ratio, meaning that not only is the screen actually smaller, but when compared side by side with the S6, it also appears smaller as well. HTC also chose to stay out of the pixels war and left the pixel count at what it as in the M8. When compared side by side, the S6 screen looks a lot more vibrant than the One M9, but it may only be noticeable when you specifically look for differences. Otherwise, the screen on the M9 is more than enough for a gorgeous display.

STORAGE

Galaxy S6: Variants of 32GB, 64GB, and 128GB with no option for expandable memory.
HTC One M9: Only the 32GB model available, but with option to expand up to 2TB of external memory.

With the widespread emergence of cloud memory, it seems like physical memory is not as important. However, users have grown used to the idea of Samsung phones supporting additional storage, so losing this feature is a big change to the Galaxy family. Users of the S6 will need to decide how much internal storage they want when purchasing the phone, because there’s no expanding it later on.

Owners of the M9 will not need to make such a decision. The phone comes with only 32GB of internal memory, but is capable of utilizing a 2TB microSD card. Granted, a 2TB microSD card isn’t available just yet, but you’ll will be able to use the SanDisk Ultra to supplement the phone with an additional 200GB of storage. Given that microSD cards are both relatively cheap and replaceable, buying one to boost storage seems like a much better deal in terms of getting the most memory for your dollar’s worth.

CAMERA

Galaxy S6: 16MP rear camera with autofocus, LED flash, and optical image stabilization. 5MP front camera with dual video calling.
HTC One M9: 20.7MP rear camera with autofocus, dual-LED flash. 4MP UltraPixel front camera.

The S6’s predecessor touted a good camera, but the additions done to the S6 make it a great one. The OIS helps a great deal stabilizing the camera even while you move around, and the 16MP camera ensures the quality of your photos. You’ll also be able to include everyone in your selfie with the wide-angle 5MP lens up in the front.

The M9 finally put in a real 20MP camera in the rear, much to customer’s satisfaction. It also features a dual-LED flash, which is supposed to make colours more natural. The front camera is adorned with 4MP, accompanied by UltraPixel for better lighting and clearer selfies.

SOFTWARE

Galaxy S6: Android 5.0 Lollipop with TouchWiz
HTC One M9: Android 5.0 Lollipop with Sense 7.0

Both companies have blazed a trail of their own with TouchWiz and Sense. There have always been complaints regarding bloatware and lag with TouchWiz, but we’re finally starting to see Samsung responding to these complaints. TouchWiz on the S6 should prove to be one of this company’s most bloat free devices to date. Of course, there are a few goodies packaged with this system that many have grown to love. We have the S Planner, S Note, and badge counts for notifications.

HTC features the new Home Sense Widget with a Theme Generator. People generally don’t complain about lag when it comes to the Sense UI, but that may be because it’s very close to stock Android, which is notable for being buttery smooth. Home Sense looks good on paper, but it might not be as practical when used. Theme Generator will be very popular with those who love to personalize their phones.

BATTERY

Galaxy S6: Non-removable 2550mAh
HTC One M9: Non-removable 2860mAh

Fans of the Galaxy phones for their interchangeable batteries may be looking toward other options, because both phones now feature sealed batteries.

Even though the S6 packs more pixels, it has a smaller battery than the M9. We think that this might be because Samsung wanted to keep their phones as thin as possible, but we’re not sure that this was the best decision to make. In an age where people are constantly carrying chargers, it’s arguable that battery life is a deal breaker when it comes to choosing a phone. The phone comes with Samsung’s own Exynos 7420 rather than a Qualcomm processor, so we’ll see how it affects battery life.

HTC chose to ramp up their battery capacity to 2860mAh. Coupled with a smaller display and a smaller pixel count, we’re sure that this will easily be a day-and-a-half phone. It also has Qualcomm’s own Snapdragon 810 processor, which operates on either of the four higher or lower processing cores in order to maximize efficiency.

It’s interesting to note that according to Droid Life’s poll on which phone their readers would rather buy, the S6 Edge takes the lead, followed by the S6, before we have the M9 in last place.

Will you be getting the S6 for its fantastic camera and revolutionary body, or will you carry on the HTC legacy with the M9 for its expandable memory and bigger battery? Which phone will you buy?

No matter which phone you choose (or even if you purchase both!), cellunlocker.net will help you unlock it! You should be able to buy your new flagship phone locked from most service providers. If you’re in Canada, you can look toward Telus, Bell, and Rogers. USA users can visit their nearest AT&T, or T-Mobile store.
