DMCA Ruling on Cell Phone Unlocking: What You Need to Know
If you’re a U.S. customer planning to unlock your phone, recent changes to the law may impact you. Effective January 26, 2013, unlocking devices manufactured after this date requires permission from your carrier. However, devices made before this date remain 100% legal to unlock.
This rule, part of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), applies only to U.S. residents. If you’re outside the U.S., these restrictions don’t apply, and you’re free to unlock your device without any legal concerns.
Key Details:
- Devices Made Before January 26, 2013: Safe to unlock without carrier permission.
- Devices Made After January 26, 2013: Carrier authorization required.
- Outside the U.S.: This law does not apply.
As per the legislation passed by the Library of Congress under the DMCA, unlocking U.S. devices manufactured from January 26, 2013, onward without carrier consent is prohibited. At Cellunlocker, we take compliance seriously and cannot unlock such devices without proper authorization. Customers are responsible for ensuring their devices meet these legal requirements before proceeding.
